DJ Spider

has been described as “vibrant”, “surprising”, “kick-ass”, and “Omigod, is she really that tall?”

DJ Spider has been cosplaying and costuming for over ten years, but her choices are usually a little off the beaten path as she chooses to dig deep into comic book archives on mainstream characters and recreate costumes that are not often seen, or generally ignored because of the retro-awfulness of them. Having grown up with comics from the 80s and 90s, she has lots of subject matter to choose from! She has cosplayed over 40 comic book characters such as Wonder Woman, Dazzler, Zatanna, Rogue, and Big Barda, and has a wishlist of hundreds of characters long. She has been a guest on a number of podcasts and panels to discuss cosplaying and costuming, and is one of the admins for

TheSuperheroCostumingForum.com. You can find her at local conventions like HeroesCon, Charlotte ComicCon and ConCarolinas, as well as national events suck as DragonCon, ConVergence and NC ComicCon.

DJ Spider is also actually a DJ as well. Primarily a goth/industrial DJ with a healthy dose of 80s, 90s, dance, EDM and electro, DJ Spider has spun a variety of formats over the last 20 years, she is ridiculously honored to have been voted “Charlotte’s Best Party DJ” for the last 6 years (2006-2011) by the readers of Creative Loafing. Currently she holds residencies at The Roxbury in Uptown Charlotte with Sprockets (A Tribute to MTV's 120 Minutes), Big Mamma's House of Burlesque, at the Visulite, and Bats II: Electric Boogaloo at UpStage in NoDa, and does a number of guest spots around the US as time permits. As an avid costumer and admitted geek, she's also been able to combine her Djing with her attendance at conventions, where “instead of glowsticks, they use light sabres!”

To sum up, she is: DJ, cosplayer, costumer, geek, social media junkie, foodie, crafty type, and goofball. Kind of a wacky version of Suzie Homemaker and Martha Stewart, if she came wrapped in spandex and spiderwebs. Occasionally NSFW.

DJ Spider answers 25 of the Best

Who was the last person you told “I love you”?
DJ Spider:  My boyfriend this morning (though I'm pretty sure I told the cats, too).

What will you find in your refrigerator if you looked right now?
DJ Spider:  Grilled chicken, sauteed kale, sliced melon and strawberries, blue cheese, and the makings of Caribbean meat pates (chilling dough and spices meat filling).

What was the last expletive that you used?
DJ Spider:  Crapballs.

When was the last time you cried?
DJ Spider:  Sunday, when they announced the new Doctor on BBC. I tend to get weepy at any strongly emotional events with swoopy music.

What is the worst tasting thing you have ever eaten?
DJ Spider:  Uni (sea urchin roe) - it's like fishy peanut butter that sticks to the roof of your mouth.

In the film of your life, who plays you and what is the title?
DJ Spider:  Uma Thurman stars in "Decorative and Functional".

What is the last furry thing that you touched?
DJ Spider:  My cats, when they piled into the office chair with me.

When was the last time you had a hangover?
DJ Spider:  Probably January, during some of the icy weather, as a result of too much fireball.

Do you remember the last time you saw a random act of kindness?
DJ Spider:  It was actually my friend Bob in Denver - he will randomly drop happy comments and thoughts via Facebook posts on different profiles - just that simple effort makes me smile.

If your iPod could only hold 3 songs, what would they be?
DJ Spider:  Nine Inch Nails - Head Like A Hole, Toad the West Sprocket - Come Back Down, Kitty Kallen's Little Things Mean A Lot.

What are you currently reading?
DJ Spider:  Other than the huge stack of comics next to my bed, I'm reading Diana Gabaldon's An Echo In the Bone.

Have you ever broken someone’s heart?
DJ Spider:  I'd love to say no, but I'm sure I have unintentionally.

If personalities had an odor, what would you smell like?
DJ Spider:  Fennel, chai, sawdust, the ocean and wet soil.

You are running in a race and overtake the second-place runner. What position are you now in?
DJ Spider:  the best position to see the winner's butt!

Describe your happy place?
DJ Spider:  Curled up on the couch in a blanket with a book, with nibbles and food at hand.

What is the longest period that you have ever gone without taking a bath?
DJ Spider:  After going through a hurricane in the Caribbean, probably about 5 days before I could take a bucket bath. It was probably about a month or so before I had an actual hot shower.

What is your theme song?
DJ Spider:  Every superhero song ever!

Have you ever been spanked or spanked someone as an adult?
DJ Spider:  I was spanked as a child, for misbehaving, and I'm none the worse for it.

What do you do when you feel sad or depressed?
DJ Spider:  Eat!

If you were being attacked by the tickle monster, who would you want it to be?
DJ Spider:  Nathan Fillion ;P

Do you believe in ghosts? Why?
DJ Spider:  I believe that there are probably places that contain residual emotional energy which some people can feel. I'm pretty sure I've seen/felt it.

Describe the perfect kiss using no more than 5 words?
DJ Spider:  Soft, sweet, unexpected.

What is your greatest fear?
DJ Spider:  Being buried alive with a shark.

What is the best dish you can cook?
DJ Spider:  Yikes - tough question! It's probably a toss up between my turkey chili and my bread pudding.

Do you truly feel loved?
DJ Spider:  Yes, though I don't always think I'm deserving.

Thank you, DJ Spider!
